K-9 Unit

The City of Thomson Police Department K-9 Unit was established in 1995. The first K-9 team consisted of Lieutenant Scott Whittle and his K-9 partner, Rambo. Rambo, a Belgian Malinois, was purchased with funds donated by the community. Lt. Whittle has been with the police department since 1992 and was promoted to investigator in 1996. Rambo was retired in 1997 and passed away in 2004.

Sgt. Jared Land took over the K-9 unit in 1996 upon Lt. Whittle’s promotion. In 1997, the community once again responded to the request for funds and raised $6,500 to purchase Doerak. Doerak was also a Belgian Malinois. Doerak was retired from patrol service in 2005 due to a knee injury, but still performs community awareness for clubs and organizations.

In 2005, the community once again reinforced its belief in drug enforcement and contributed $8,500 for the purchase of our latest K-9, Kubo. He is a dual purpose narcotics detection and tracking dog. Like Doerak, he is partnered with Sgt. Land.

Each K-9 is used in a variety of duties, some of which consist of school searches, vehicle searches, search and rescue tracking and other related assignments. The City of Thomson Police Department's K-9 team is certified through the State of Georgia Region One K-9 Team. To contact the K-9 Unit, call (706) 595-2166.
