The McDuffie Museum is a museum for all, not just a few.

The McDuffie Museum provides a rare opportunity to create, from the beginning, a model museum that meets professional standards and is embraced by the residents of Dearing, Thomson and McDuffie County.

The museum is specific to the history and current conditions of McDuffie County and will tell our stories in interesting ways. This wonderful facility will honor our ancestors and teach our children about their history.

It will be a museum for all, not just a few.

The mission of the McDuffie Museum is to instill in the citizens of McDuffie County, especially its youth, an understanding of their heritage and a sense of pride in the history of their community.

We begin while the building is being prepared by presenting a museum without walls. By sharing the vision of what the museum will contain and start by telling the story of:

  • Legends of the past – Blind Willie McTell, Tom Watson
  • Land – geography, topography, geology, climate, flora
  • Communities – Native Americans, African Americans, European Americans, Wrightsboro, Boneville and more
  • Families – many families, black and white, have deep roots in the county; their contributions and genealogy are important historical aspects
  • Churches – churches have formed small communities from the earliest years. A special section will feature a church every month
  • Progress – from the railroad to the growth of the county airport (this display will include a model railroad)
  • Military Service – from the colonial and Revolutionary wars to the war in Iraq
  • Historical Timeline – major events in the history of the county to give an understanding of progression and change over time.

Capital Campaign

Our goal is to raise $1 million and open the doors of the McDuffie Museum in December 2007.

Extensive renovation is needed on the two donated buildings to house the Museum: new roof, security system, exterior scrapping and painting, interior painting, new plumbing for the bathrooms and a handicap facility, heating & air conditioning units installed, hiring of a professional museum director, and much more.

If you believe that understanding and being proud of your heritage is important, please join us and become a part of this project.
